You see those QR Codes everywhere, mostly in ads – you know, the black and white box with the little squares in it – and I’ve never bothered to learn more about them, much less use them. Until today! First I went to Wikipedia to learn more. I found out that they were created by the automotive industry, but expanded to other industries because they can store more data than a UPC Barcode. Next I chose a QR Code reader app to put on my iPhone. I read some reviews and chose one called, “Red Laser“. This is actually looks like a pretty cool app, and it does a lot more than scan QR Codes.
I found some QR Codes to scan and when I scanned them I got a message asking me if I wanted to go to that product’s web site. I also scanned in some UPC codes on some books I had nearby. This brought up a picture of the book, the cheapest price for the book on-line, and a list of possible places to purchase the book. Wow, that’s pretty cool. The app also lets you store a digital copy of any store loyalty cards you may have, provides coupons to stores near you, and has a store deal alert function you can turn on. I’m not a big shopper, so I’m not sure if these functions will come in handy, but we’ll see. I’m kind of excited to start using this app and comparing prices.
