Until now, I never...
Made the Kids Take Sole Responsibility for Getting to School On Time

nadine and miles love eachother

Monday mornings are tough to begin with, but this one was getting ridiculous.  The kids, who had gone to bed the night before loving each other so much they wanted to sleep in the same bed, woke up fighting.  Nadine couldn’t figure out what to wear, Miles wouldn’t come to the breakfast table, and they were hitting each other and messing up each others beds.  Give me a break.  So finally I lost it and yelled, “I’m done!  We need to leave by 8:25, and if you guys want to be on time for school, then you need to act like a team, and get moving.  I am not going to yell at you to get you to school on time, so if you’re late, you can just march into the office and get your pink slip. “  And with that I went downstairs to get dressed.

A few minutes later Miles called down the stairs, “MOM!” and I said, “What are you doing???” and he said, “I’m standing on top of the stairs and I’m all dressed!”  A miracle!  And for the next 15 minutes, I have to admit, I kind of enjoyed hearing them yell at each other.  Miles yelling, “Nadine, it’s 8:25, we need to leave!!” and her hustling to get on  her jacket and back pack, and then Nadine yelling back at him, “You don’t even have your shoes on, you should have put those on before eating breakfast.  Hurry up!”

We finally made it out the door and onto our bikes at 8:30, but as we were racing towards school Miles got a flat tire.  Seriously??  And they started panicking.  But I grabbed his bike, ran it home, grabbed his old bike, rode it down the alley and up the hill of the next alley, and they were cracking up seeing their enormous mom on Miles’s tiny bike.  Then we pedaled as fast as we could the rest of the way, and made it to school before the second bell had rung.  Sigh…
