Taught the Campfire Girls How to Knit

Once a month Nadine has Campfire Girls, and every month we (the moms or dads) take turns hosting them.  This Thursday was my turn, and I had no idea what we should do.  Actually I wanted to go on a nature scavenger hunt down at Golden Gardens like this one, but the weather was not going to cooperate.  Fortunately my co-host and experienced Campfire leader had a project – for the kids to write letters and draw pictures for kids at Children’s Hospital.  And wow, they wrote such amazing letters, I am so proud of them.

But they needed another project.  So I decided to teach them to knit.  I thought they’d be the perfect age to learn.  I had plenty of yarn and needles, but what I didn’t have was good patience or teaching skills.  Thank goodness I’d asked another mom to help out, and she was genius at teaching those kids to knit.  But knitting is hard, and takes perseverance, so while most of them got the knack of it pretty well, mistakes come easy when you’re new.  So most of the girls decided to switch over to finger knitting, which they already knew how to do and were good at.  Nadine, however, was one of those who persevered, as did one other girl, who really took to it.

I hope Nadine seriously picks it up some day.  She’s a girl who needs to be busy all the time.  She never just watches TV.  She watches TV and does something else like draws, or makes lanyards or bracelets.  We’ll see…
